What is a CAUS story?
In submitting your idea or news item, please remember that a story is what you’d most like to read. Readers want stories that are interesting, visual, and relevant to their lives and the world they live in. Stories should support the CAUS communication mission:
The mission of CAUS communication is to showcase through good visual storytelling the positive impact that the Virginia Tech College of Architecture and Urban Studies has on the world through its students, faculty, graduates, and partnerships.
The main elements of a good story include:
- A compelling, newsworthy, or unusual human-interest topic/angle.
- Alignment with college and university strategic goals.
- Involvement of CAUS students, alumni, faculty, staff, community, partners.
- Positive impact on our community and world.
- Strong visuals – showing people, action, and impact.
- Timeliness, currency, and relevance to today’s hot topics and pressing concerns.
Story ideas that meet these guidelines will have the best chance of being reported and published.
There are many options for sharing your news, including news releases, media outreach, CAUS and school websites, e-newsletters, and social media. The CAUS communicator will review your story proposal and determine the best means for publishing your story. Items are considered for publication according to their priority, alignment with CAUS and university mission/goals, and interest to the general public. Not all stories will be published. We will let you know within two weeks of your online form submission.
Submit requests for coverage of upcoming major events, awards, exhibitions, speakers, outreach projects, and other news proactively – at least TWO WEEKS prior to the event date.
Requests must be submitted through the online SUBMIT NEWS form and align with the strategic mission and guidelines outlined above. You do not have to write the story – simply complete the online form, so that our communicator may contact you. If you would like to draft and submit your own pre-written story, please note that it may be edited and is subject to college communications and university style guidelines.
Story requests for prescheduled/pre-arranged events that have already passed cannot be accommodated.
